As a classical archaeologist, I am interested in architecture and urbanism. I attempt to examine culture, identity and everyday life in their long-term dynamics. The focus of my own research is on the reuse and spoliation of building components in ancient Greece. As societies memories and identity are intimately connected with certain sites and places, individual buildings can serve as places of remembrance (lieu de mémoire). This also applies to individual parts of buildings, which can take on a new meaning and change of function through reuse as spolia and thus bear witness to the transition or continuity of societies and their identities.
